Afsat Communications (Africa) Ltd (Afsat) is a private company registered in Guernsey UK with subsidiaries in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Nigeria. Afsat’s major shareholder is Modern Africa One LLC, a US government OPIC backed venture capital fund with 65% shareholding. 24% of the shareholding is held by Wilken Africa Ltd. 11% of the shares are held by the Kenyan owned Milas Ltd. Afsat’s headquarters is in Nairobi, Kenya.
Afsat was formed to provide high- end satellite data network solutions for corporates, banks and government organizations in East & Central Africa. We have over 20 years experience in the telecommunication sector, 10 of which have been in building VSAT networks in East Africa. Afsat holds Public Data Communication Licenses in Tanzania and Uganda also has a commercial VSAT Network Operator license in Kenya.
Afsat has an ever-growing Africa wide presence currently spanning 26 countries, and represented by over 32 distributors. Afsat provides quality communications solutions and has deployed over 4,000 active Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) making it one of the largest VSAT companies in Africa. Afsat has over 50,000 corporate customers.
Afsat’s expertise is in designing, installing and operating satellite networks to suit customer requirements. This is proven by our substantial customer base of banks, large corporate organizations, educational and research institutions and even individual customers.

Afsat has working agreements with VSAT equipment suppliers including Hughes [The world's leading provider of broadband satellite services, and the world's leading satellite terminal manufacturer with over 800,000 interactive VSAT terminals deployed worldwide.], Viasat, Radyne, Comstream, Comtech EF Data, Prodelin, New Japan Radio and Anasat equipment. Space segment capacity is obtained from Intelsat, [the largest provider of fixed satellite services worldwide] and SES New Skies [providers of outstanding satellite communications solutions via a global satellite fleet]. Net2Phone another partner is the leading provider of voice services over IP networks worldwide enabling business-quality calls between computers, telephones and other telephony devices.
Afsat offers services under the flagship brand ‘iWay’. Services include iWay Corporate Networks and the iWay Dedicated service, amongst whose customers include; Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Amalgamated Bank of South Africa, NBC Bank, Commercial Rural Development Bank (Tanzania), Stanbic Bank, Caltex, Diamond Trust Bank (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania), Cotecna Inspections SA and British American Tobacco (Kenya and DRC).
Afsat also offers a low cost direct satellite Internet access solution which is called iWay Broadband. Some of the iWay Broadband customers include; Oxfam, World Vision, SchoolNet Uganda, Boeing Aircraft, Canadian Embassy, Benedictine Fathers, ICRC Tanzania and Rakai District Project Uganda.
Afsat’s key resource is our personnel. They provide the technical expertise required to manage an Africa wide network such as ours.
